![]() Throughout the series, Cherry Ames receives two marriage proposals from men who she meets, but refuses to marry and remains dedicated to her work, unlike other fictional nurses of the time. The series encouraged girls to become nurses and showed that women could contribute to the war effort and the work force and be valued for their efforts outside of the home. Cherry Ames was a young female nurse character who solved medical mysteries in a variety of settings. The Cherry Ames series was published in the United States by Grosset & Dunlap between 19, and is comprised of twenty-seven books.
